Last days were very productive in our office. We don’t have on our minds only the number of new projects and work, but also our free time, which we decided to spend together. We played a small football tournament at our soccer table. Many of us trains every day how to score the goal successfully. Some of our Ruby on Rails developers had the good moment to show how great competitors they are!
Before we have started the game we settled the rules. We played in two groups A and B. There were five teams in each group.
The game has started at 5 PM. We had all evening to spend it together. There were some suggestions how to code the game in ruby to make it easier to win, but at last we have chosen the traditional way!
To make the players stronger we ordered many kinds of very good pizza! The feast and the draw for the first Railwaymen Cup has opened the event.
After three hours of exciting moments, connected sometimes with music, we met the winners: Tomek, Ruby on Rails developer and Lukasz, iOS developer, won all games and whole tournament.
We hope that edition 1.0 was the first Railwaymen event, where Ruby on Rails, iOS and Android developers meet together to make one big team in fair play games.

An apple a day not only keeps the doctor away. It has become a political statement. Since the business newspaper Puls Biznesu has published an editorial entitled “Stand against Putin: eat apples, drink cider”.

Additionaly the campaign on social media (Facebook or Twitter) has endorsed and grown up very quickly. Thousands of people are taking a pictures when eating these fruits and publishing with the hashtag #jedzjablka (#eatapples).

Programmers like to take a longer break far away from their daily lives. They can write a code in the comfortable conditions, for example at the sea coast. Changing a location acts as a refresher. It gives them vitality they need to finish writing the code. The location they choose for the vacation are different and depends on the programmer’s personality. While some of them prefer the sea, others choose rocky mountains. Then there are those who prefer crouded cities. Anyway, when you are a ruby developer, it doesn’t matter where you are, you will need the following smart tips for your work:
1. Operator converts any value on type boolean.
foo = Object.new
2. If you pass a block to File.open method, after that you don’t have to concern about the closing the file. The record is as follows:
file = File.open(“file.txt”, “w”)
is equivalent to:
File.open(“file.txt”, “w”) do |file|
3.Checking quickly the file. rb in terms of syntax without executing it:
ruby -c file.rb
Additional information (for example about assigned but not used variables);
ruby -wc file.rb
Your coding vacation will be really awesome! Warm and sunny August brings all good for #SummerSoftware!

This is the last week of FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil. This tournament is not done yet. Spectacular Germany’s seven goals will count for nothing in coming Sunday’s final, where it will have to produce something really special all over again against either Argentina or the Netherlands. Fans are no longer satisfied just watching games on TV. Using their mobile devices they are joining the action and are ready to provide online commentary to supplement TV viewing. Football fans use mobile apps to follow fresh news straight from the sport grounds.
Let’s check mobile market in Brazil. eMarketer estimates that only 34,5% of the country’s population use the internet on mobile phones. It seems that not many World Cup fans in the host country will be logging online on a mobile device to keep up with the tournament, anyway the offer of apps either for iOS and Android prepared for sporting events is broad and interesting.
Our summary opens the official FIFA app. You just must have it. You can find there all you can expect and even more. It allows to vote for the best player of each game, and more, you can win the real football. In addition to the results of all 64 games of the tournament, the app also offers updated minute by minute blogs with photographs and video materials straight from the field.
It includes also tables, rankings and interviews with players. The app provides access to the live scores of 197 football world leagues affiliated to FIFA.
Unfortunately the official FIFA app is not for the Windows Phone, but the holders of smartphones running by Microsoft can use other unofficial counterparts.
One of them is Onefootball Brasil, available in 15 languages, of course for IOS and Android too. It includes almost everything that the official app has. Its content largely comes from news agencies and cooperating with Onefootball sites. The app also has the option of LiveTracker, where minute by minute we can read games’ reports.
This edition is a part of the most popular app – Onefootball, which is community uniting 14 million football fans in more than 200 countries in the world.
Sports apps are a new field of our works. World Cup 2014 is the great time to learn from the best. Making data analysis we can soon provide really good solution for both, our new client and sports fans all over the world.
The 2013 is just behind us. Time always passes to fast. As usual, the beginning of a New Year is a good opportunity to make a summary of what we’ve achieved in the previous year. Especially of these things that we’ve done but we couldn’t find enough time to share. So how about the last months?
In December we organised a Christmas Party on a boat on the Vistula. Not only we wished each other all the best, but also we summed up the finishing year. It was a good occasion to remind ourselves pivotal and enriching moments for the company.
Few weeks earlier we went to London, in order to take part in a business speed networking. It was an event created especially for startups like us and we participated in it for the first time. What it was exactly?
It was an international session, based on intensive two – minute mini meetings. People that organised networking claimed that it was possible to make more contacts in one hour than some people do in a career. The idea was in fact quite efficient, because as a result to London came a lot of people from all over the world. Moreover, the formula of such short meetings let us save our time and get to know as much people as possible. Maybe we will go next time too.
Although we did not have much spare time, we managed to see some „musts” in London and to feel the atmosphere of a huge and really multinational metropolis.
Then, another event that we took under our wings was Ruby on Rails workshop. It was the fifth time that we’ve organised this workshop due to a very high level of interest shown by our applicants. This time we cooperated with Cracow University of Technology where the workshop took place. The main topic was „Notice board in Ruby on Rails framework”. We also taught how to log in via Facebook and using other social networks.
Our participants were also keen on such topics like tagging a place on google maps, so we included it in our programme. In order to get better and better, in the end we made an evaluation questionnaire. To our pleasant surprise, we were very positively judged. The sixth time has been already taken into consideration, so you are warmly invited.
In the 2013 we decided to show up during a job fair in Cracow, organised by University of Science and Technology. The event, dedicated mainly to students and graduates from such fields like IT and engineering, had a large turnout. Visiting our stand, everyone could get a complex information about the company and the recruitment process. One of our main goals was to prove that our company is worth working for!
In the next months we are planning to work even harder than before and to have more challenges than ever.
We will keep you up to date!
The Railwaymen Ruby on Rails Summer School 2013 has just completed. It was the end of the training and the end of the summer time. But we are sure, that this time was not wasted.
We decided to organise training, because we feel like we have a knowledge and experience that we want to share with the others.
Railwaymen Ruby on Rails Summer School 2013 was the first edition of trainings organised by our company. Despite having prepared all staff long before the first day of training, we were full of doubts. The first time is the difficult one. And the experience with one-day workshops about similar topics did not help, because Summer School was planned to be a one-month event and we wanted it to be done perfectly.
We started preparations with the selection of the main topic and the topic “AskExpert – social platform. The project and the implementation” was chosen. The topic included the list of lessons:
2. User authentication
3. Social network integration
4. Background jobs implementation
5. Post creation
6. Contact management
7. Post comments
Two of us, Tomek Wielgocki and Kamil Baćkowski was asked to be the speakers and to be honest, they did it well.
Being curious about the feedback from students, we asked them for short evaluation. And we received very positive comments. One of them you can see below:
“I wish it was more courses like this one. Maybe it will prompt the others to promote Ruby and RoR to be more popular.”
These words give as a motivation to plan second edition of training about Ruby on Rails…. and not only. iOS training is something we think about, too. Follow us to get news about next courses!
Every Ruby developer must have been there, and so have we…
Railwaymen started the vacation season, but do not think it means our programmers have fun on the beach. They traveled many kilometers for the newest Ruby ideas to the source of the knowledge – the European Ruby Conference (EuRuKo) – the annual meeting that even Yukihiro Matzumoto never misses.
EuRuKo is the professional meeting of Ruby experts. What is worth mentioned, the conference is non-profit and the whole event is organized by volunteers from local Ruby community. It is widely known that Ruby community is one of the strongest open source communities. Railwaymen founders could have not missed the chance for exchanging ideas and sharing experience.
That was great to see so many Ruby developers gathered together in one place. General speaking the conference showed the development of the Ruby language. The speakers inspired programmers to look for the other possibilities, like alternative languages and what’s more they promoted the idea of creating our own unique language, that was very interesting.
The ancient walls and columns of Athens made a great background to this innovative atmosphere of being in touch with the newest technology.
Next year conference will take place in the capital of Ukraine – Kiev. There was a choice between Kiev and Zurich, but finally Kiev won. This is the 3nd year the Zurich tried to be chosen and failed again. Kiev is not very far away from our office in Krakow, so we have just marked the date of EuRuKo 2013 in our event calendar, for sure.
Railwaymen flag, as being the symbol of Railwaymen business travels fits well Partenon. 🙂
